HUTT STREET CENTRE
Undertaken in the first semester of the Masters program in 2016, the Hutt Street Centre project was an addition onto an existing building. The Hutt Street Centre is a homeless shelter in the South Eastern corner of the Adelaide City. Each year the shelter serves around 50,000 meals as well as support to nearly 2,000 people in need.
For the assignment, each person received a persona in order to fully understand the needs of different users of the building. The persona given was a mother and child who had run away from an abusive partner. They sought safety, and the proposal offers this with a different entrance and separated facilities for women and children.
The playground network
Through research, it was found that parents of young children had a network of playgrounds that they would frequent around Adelaide. This was applied to the architecture by designing a scattered network of child-safe areas throughout the building. As the persona was a mother and child, the design centred around homeless women and children not the homeless community as a whole.

The building on the Northern side is the existing building that I have redesigned to better suit the function of the future Hutt Street Centre. The building on the Southern side is the new edition. The building wraps up and over the existing building, providing a large courtyard in the centre and small courtyards and rooftops throughout.
